The design of the New Tram System has been one of the key infrastructure projects in Florence in recent years. The introduction of the “Tramvia” trams involved the construction of many supporting structures: viaducts, subway, bridges, walls, technological systems. GPA acted as architectural and engineering consultant on all viaducts, bridges and structures. The new tram lines have a total length of 35 km and required the construction of a new subway underneath Talenti Road, a new structure for “A.Moro” viaduct and a new main entrance to the underground car park at Santa Maria Novella train station. GPA was responsible for the structural design of each of these elements in addition to the architectural design of the new Station Square at Santa Maria Novella and the design of the tram headquarters and repair and recovery sheds. Line 1 Runs from Scandicci to Santa Maria Novella Railway station, Florence. Line 3 Runs from Peretola Airport to the Florence’s city centre. Two additional lines will follow shortly.
